The main goal of a synthetic diamond is to be as close as it can be to the real thing. For the most part, synthetic diamonds do that! There are a few major differences, though, that are worth mentioning between the two. They might even help you make your decision on what kind of ring you want to buy! A lot of it has to do with price, but that’s not all there is to a diamond. Here’s our take on what you need to know about synthetic diamonds vs real diamonds!

 

Color

Like I talked about in my article on the 4 C’s, diamonds are rated based on color. The less color they have, the higher rating they’re given. Less color = higher value! But that’s not the case with fancy colors. Vivid greens, blues, and pinks are very rare and very expensive for natural diamonds. With synthetic diamonds, though, fancy colors are a lot easier – and cheaper – to add, making synthetic the decisive winner for the color category.

 

Fluorescence

Fluorescence isn’t necessarily a bad thing in diamonds, and both synthetic and natural diamonds have it. The catch is that the fluorescence of synthetic diamonds is different from that of real ones. The color and pattern of fluorescence in synthetic diamonds is clearly man-made. In fact, it’s one of the common ways to find out if a diamond is synthetic or not. Real diamonds come from a lot of different locationsThat being said, it’s impossible to tell exactly where your diamond came from unless you’re buying specifically from an responsible supplier. Real diamonds may come from large mining operations that harm the environment, or from other forms of mining that barely damage the environment at all. They can also come from impoverished countries where working conditions are  dangerous and the sale of diamonds fuels wars and conflicts. 

Synthetic diamonds, on the other hand, come from a lab. While the idea of forming your diamond in a tube might feel a little less sentimental, you’re guaranteed an environment-friendly, conflict-free gem. While your personal preference might be different, there’s no question which source is the clean, ethical choice.

 

Cost

Although rates vary, synthetic diamonds are estimated to sell for 20-30% less than a natural diamond. As technology and availability improves, the price for synthetic diamonds will keep getting lower! Synthetic diamonds are the definite winner if you’re looking for the more affordable option.

 

Resale

Many jewelers will tell you that there is no resale market for synthetic diamonds. This is a lie – at least, a partial one. There are definitely people that will buy used synthetic diamonds, like Ada Diamonds, for example. However, the resale value of a synthetic diamond isn’t quite as powerful as that of a natural diamond yet.

That being said, you won’t walk away from selling your used rings having made a profit unless they’re antiques, even if they are made with real diamonds. Once a diamond ring is sold, its value drops tremendously. In almost all cases, if you’re reselling used jewelry, you’re on the losing end of the bargain. Even so, looking at the argument of synthetic diamonds vs real diamonds, natural diamonds win out on resale.

 

Chemistry

Aside from a few minor details, synthetic diamonds do a really good job of being diamonds. They aren’t just mimicking what a real diamond looks like. Synthetic diamonds are diamonds. They may not come from the depths of the earth, but as far as atomic structure goes, synthetic diamonds are made of pure carbon, just like real diamonds are.

When you have to size up synthetic diamonds vs real diamonds, on most counts, synthetic diamonds have the advantage. They’re cheaper, are easier to customize, and are guaranteed to come from a clean, ethical source. When it comes to buying diamonds, though, personal preference always wins out. For some people, the idea of a diamond coming from the earth is the most important part! Others get turned off when they learn about minor differences between the two, like fluorescence.
